"What Will It Take for Americans to Redeem Their Humanity?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-12 13:02:03

The surreal experience of hearing actual debate on PBS about whether waterboarding is torture. One individual -- a former intelligence officer who has been waterboarded and who has waterboarded other individuals he was training in the technique says. "It is not simulated drowning it is actual drowning." "It is slowly filling another human's lungs with water until they are willing to tell you anything you want to hear. Anything to make it stop. It is torture and it was used by individuals tried in the Nuremburg Trials. It is against all norms of prisoner treatment including the Geneva Convention." It has been used in Argentina in Burma.. in what other countries despised for their absence of human rights? And yet the other American in this discussion wants to give the President his "full arsenal a full toolbox." Dear God. What does it take for us to redeem our humanity? Haven't we done enough?

Recently. Sofia Coppola’s beautiful film. “Marie Antoinette,” sparked some minor arouse in the 18th century though regrettably it was a short-lived revival. The style of 18th century France is simply not for everyone. It reminds some of Liberace or Alexis Carrington. There’s nothing wrong with Liberace or Alexis Carrington of course but the style of 18th century France was much more refined and much more interesting which is why an possess such as “Marie-Antoinette and the Petit Trianon at Versailles,” is so important. Running until February 17th at the Legion of recognise and organized by the Musée National of the Château de Versailles the possess gives a visual history of the Queen’s Petit Trianon through 88 pieces of furniture paintings and sculpture from this château. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see these pieces in person without going to France. I am so happy to see that at the opening on November 15 several museum supporters dressed in the spirit of the night — either in true 18th century apparel or in super chic ensembles inspired by the times. The great Thomas Gibbons took some wonderful photos some of which you can see below (for more tour ): Dede Wilsey. Trevor and Alexis Traina and John Traina. One reason I love Dede Wilsey? She’s the only person in San Francisco who when asked to dress like Marie Antoinette can put on a necklace that looks like it belonged to the woman herself. And she looks great doing it. Thank you. Dede Wilsey for wearing gems desire gems were meant to be worn! And thanks to the book Arts Museums of San Francisco for another spectacular exhibit that is

"Burning In by Mireille Juchau (Review)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-09 23:20:59

Should I stay or should I go? It’s the challenge that every artist who lives outside the world’s cultural capitals faces at one point or another. Burning In the remarkable second novel from up and coming Australian writer Mireille Juchau takes what’s admittedly familiar territory an aspiring antipodean artist moves overseas and applies a psychological insight so penetrating the novel actually succeeds in illuminating the dilemma in some surprisingly fresh and by compete turns disturbing new ways. Beginning with a taut farewell to her mother in a departures sit at Sydney airport it soon becomes obvious that Martine a photographer in her late twenties is being drawn to New York for reasons far more complex than her artistic go. Not only leaving her country behind she’s also on the run from an ageing and lonely mother named Lotte a Holocaust survivor who over the years has become increasingly dependent on Martine. As she boards the cut. Martine guiltily savors the freedom that lies ahead. This guilt is just one many cleverly crafted mysteries gothic at heart forming the layers that underpin this deceptively simple story. Seeing how Martine is revealed from the outset as something of an independent operator it comes as a bit of a surprise when not desire after her arrival in New York she shacks up with a guy she meets randomly in a park. Within the space of a week she’s become a voluntary prisoner of her new lover. Joe having abandoned her own apartment and her camera for the no strings attached sex and strangely comfortable anonymity of a new love affair. And it’s here we start to get some comprehend of the complexities of the novel and Juchau’s skill in portraying contradictions in her characters that seem not only believable but entirely necessary. As the introspective title suggests. Burning In is a psychological novel and its deep concern for motivation and the subconscious impulses and inclinations that drive our actions is what differentiates it from more conventional tales of creative expatriation. When Martine becomes pregnant by her lover. Joe and gives bring forth to a daughter. Ruby the question of how a young woman can be both an artist and mother is brought sharply into focus. We discover the effects pregnancy has on Martine’s bring home the bacon how “when the nausea passed and she returned to taking photos her prints floated up grainy unfocussed the edges of everything turned liquid”. Of course these are.

With a slight nod to the original intent of this blog or at least part of its intent: to carry fragrance to a smelly world.. today I wear my holy grail scent the cause to be perceived for which I would leave all other if forced to and I certainly wish that doesn't happen because all my other bottles would be homeless and that would alter me ineffably sad -- and did I mention I got my toes painted fire engine red today? Fun. Oh alter. The fragrance. by Ormonde Jayne. A rose by any other name. Also just now. I construe a snippet on a piece of artwork featured in someone's decor blog. Here is a paraphrase: "At some time in her life usually by midlife a woman makes her most important decision: whether to be bitter." Cheerful huh? I think you know where I land on this issue.
